Velana International Airport, formerly known as Male International Airport, is the main international gateway into the Maldives. Located on Hulhulé Island in the North Malé Atoll, it’s situated near the capital city, Malé. This airport is crucial for the Maldives’ tourism-driven economy, handling a significant number of seaplane flights to luxury resorts scattered across the islands.
With its unique combination of regular runways and seaplane docks, it provides a picturesque entry and exit point for visitors to this tropical paradise.
As in almost all cases, the airport is located outside of the city center, or even several kilometers from the capital. In case of Maldives is the airport located on neighbour island Hulhumale.
The island Hulhumale is connected with capital Male, by regular ferry service, running until the evening hours in 10 minute intervals. The journey takes 5 minutes and the ticket costs the equivalent of about 2 USD.
The airport is very small, there is main terminal for international flights, and second smaller terminal for flights between atolls and sightseeing flights.
Although it is the main airport of the Maldives, it makes cozy impression, it is clear and you can not lose there. Classically it is recommended to arrive at the airport two hours before departure, but in here is one hour before the flight enough.
Airport became the name after Prime Minister 1957-1968 and 1968-1978 President Ibrahim Nasir, who still enjoys great popularity.
At the airport is nonstop luggage storage and a cash machine (ATM). You can buy a local SIM card and there is a Burger King.
Just a few stops by bus from the airport is a partner Swell hotel, where we offer accommodation for our clients, who would like to stay overnight in Male. In such case are clients picked up at the airport and taken to the hotel with luggage and the next day to the ferry terminal, from where they move to the main island of Male. From there start all the public ferries “MTCC.”
Clients who book a private speedboat will be expected by our colleagues right at the exit of the arrivals hall. Collegues take care of the luggage, customers are driven directly in about 30 minutes to the Huraa island.
There is a luggage storage facility at the airport.
